Cocoa Gravy

Leslee read my last post and wondered what Cocoa Gravy was and wanted to know more about it. I thought I would share this wonderful concoction with you. Your kids will love you for it. :o)

Cocoa Gravy is something my mother has cooked for us as long as I can remember. Her mother cooked it for her (and her 10 brothers and sisiters) and I ocassionally cook it for my girls. It is like slightly thinned pie filling or pudding and just so good. I don't know where it originated but there are recipes for it in all the church cookbooks in our area. They each vary a little but the end result is the same. When I first made it for CarlyJo she called it To-To Dravy, and that is what we actually call it around our house :o)

Cocoa Gravy/Chocolate Gravy/ToTo Dravy

1/4 c. sugar
1 T cocoa
2 T flour
1 c. milk (i make mine with skim)
1T margarine or butter

Stir sugar, cocoa and flour together in a sauce pan, gradually blend in milk. Cook over medium heat until thick, stirring constantly. Stir in margarine. Serve over biscuits or bread.
*you can also cook it in the microwave 2 minutes at a time until thick

Let me know if you try it. I am curious if anyone else has heard of it and cooks it?

  3. Susie:Yea it's low fat if you only eat a little, but the big fat buttery biscuits make it SOOOOO good!

Raggedy: It is very quick and if you like chocolate pie you will love this. It isn't really icky sweet either.

  7. The only place I have ever had chocolate gravy was on vacation (when I was a teen) we visited relatives and friends in AR & MO, and one of the ladies fixed it.
    I had forgotten about it.
I need to get the cocoa, so I can make it for my family.

  8. This sounds interesting. I'd like to try it with ice cream.

I wonder if it's any healthier than the jar of nutella that George likes to eat out of with a spoon while he's watching TV.
